The City Council consists of the Mayor and four Councilmembers. The term of office for each member is four years, with a limit of three consecutive terms for each position. The City Council of the City of San Marcos serves its community at-large - there are no districts within the City. The Mayor is directly elected by the voters.
It is the duty of the City Clerk to conduct Municipal Elections in accordance with the City of San Marcos Municipal Code, the Elections Code, and the Political Reform Act of 1974.
The City Council of the City of San Marcos adopted a Campaign Contribution Ordinance, which can be viewed here or in Chapter 2.16 of the San Marcos Municipal Code.
YOUR VOTE COUNTS!
The deadline to register to vote in any election is 15 days prior to the election. Registration forms are available in the City Clerk Department, as well as on the Registrar of Voters' website, Voter Registration. Remember, you must re-register if you have moved or changed your name.

The next General Municipal Election is scheduled for November 2, 2010 for the expiring terms of Mayor Jim Desmond, Councilmember Mike Preston, and Councilmember Chris Orlando.

RUNNING FOR OFFICE
The nomination period for the November 2, 2010 election is Monday, July 12, 2010 through Thursday, August 5, 2010. During this period, declared and prospective candidates need to schedule a meeting with the City Clerk to obtain nomination papers and other election related materials.
