Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Preparedness Wildfire

Emergency Preparedness is an essential component to your well being and survival after a disaster has occurred.  The following list will help you prepare for the next emergency.

Consider Protective Actions
Protective actions are actions you can take to safeguard your family members and yourself from harm. The most common emergency protective actions are evacuation and shelter-in-place.

  • Evacuation means to leave the area of actual or potential hazard.
  • Shelter-in-place means to stay inside. This includes additional precautions such as turning off air-conditioning and ventilation systems as well as closing all windows and doors.

Prepare an Emergency Supply Kit

  • Maintain an emergency supply kit for any emergency.
  • In the event of a disaster, you may be without immediate help for up to 72 hours.

What to do After a Problem Occurs

  • Remain calm.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Use your family preparedness plan.
  • Stay informed.
  • If an evacuation is ordered, follow the instructions of local officials regarding evacuation routes and the location of shelters.
  • If shelter-in-place is recommended, local officials will provide instructions on necessary action.
  • Do not leave your sheltered location or return to the evacuated area until it is deemed safe to do so by local officials.

EOCCity of San Marcos Emergency Operations Center
The City of San Marcos maintains an extensive emergency operations plan that governs the operations of the City during a disaster.  If necessary, the City can open and staff the City’s Emergency Operations Center.  In the event of a major emergency, the Emergency Operations Center would be used to coordinate resources, assist in mitigating the emergency, and properly allocate emergency resources and relief aid.
